I have been tasked with creating the The specified document was not found. document. Its a big job to do well so I am going to use this thread to get collaboration and assistance.
The plan is to use this thread as the workspace for getting the document to a happy first release draft, this stops all of the backwards and forwards chatter messing up the document thread. Once the document is created this thread can be archived or die, as the actual document will be the living item.
So, lets get started.
What do you think is important for a holding a workshop on BC and DR?
Any ideas of good sources of information?
Do you know any good people in this field who may be good contributors?
What should not go into the workshop? Were could we get it wrong?
I certainly have plenty of ideas which I will start to outline. Once an outline is completed its on to fleshing it out. Being a workshop the scope is to give a framework for walking through the issues, its not a training course on how to do DR.
Looking forward to your contributions or at least your feedback on my progress.

Document : VI3.Blueprint BCDR Workshop
OK, I will start by giving you my answers to the questions posed, then we can start formulating some sort of outline. These are random thoughts in no particular order. The "BC/DR" workshop really becomes a DR workshop.
The things imortant for a BC/DR workshop:
Sorces of info:
Contributors:
What should not go into the workshop:
Hope this helps...

David, you speak my language Sir. Fantastic, you have hit so many of my trigger points that I too see as so important for DR (failback, ongoing backup, the multiple methods).
Okay, lets start creating an outline, Just cut and past adding, removing and re-sequencing. Getting a good outline will make the document flow well and we can then attack parts to flesh out. If we use the # number outlining, put the title and and detail in brackets.

I think the first section of Overview and background is easy to achieve. If we get that list well locked down we can then mark it up into the doco and draft all of the content. This may be phase 1.
We can break out into a separate phase (2) the "Planning your DR" which is where we detail the issue of "Okay, given that bit of education, how do you actually plan or put together a strategy, every solution and requirement is different, so we are not going to tell you what to do, but we want to steer or guide people through the process of coming up with a plan, high level design.
The first bit is easy, the second bit will require some thinking to keep it simple, generic and something people can understand.
We also need to consider the other document in the blue print which is the actual DR design or plan, this is just the workshop, its working towards the next step so we should have that it view.
Really keen to hear peoples thoughts. Are we on the right track?
Take that list and add/modify. Maybe use colours and strike through to highlight changes.

For the details on AD there is a section on DR for AD in the resource Resources: Virtualizing Microsoft Active Directory which we should remember to review and also reference.

Rod -
Here are some additios for you (pre coffee). I am assuming that this is a public post and anyone can offer input, which is good. Also, will this be a document or a powerpoint with lots of notes and a guide?

Here is a proposed diagram to include to detail the replication points described in the Overview part of the outline.
Its attached, hopefully I can get it to display inline.

Nice! This is usually something I end up drawing on the largest whiteboard I can find.
Wait till you see my full framework one, this is just a slice. But I may draw that one my hand and scan, then someone smarter than I can make it look nice.

Yeah..when it comes to powerpoint and visio diagrams, I am a stumbling idiot. I can't even draw a straight line with a straight-edge!
Dave are you happy with the outline of the overview? Do you think thats ready for putting into the document and starting the write up?
Yes this is public so everyone can thrash this out.
It will be a document in the Blueprint format but once its written we could take the content and crate a powerpoint which would be an attachment resource. Being a workshop a powerpoint would be helpful, but I don't think its our first objective. Great idea.
I wrote "protection groups" when I should have written "consistency groups".
Like the changes to Section 2.
For the inputs should we include RPO/RTO, application dependencies, site locations and distances, network addressing details, LAN and WAN diagram.
For the outputs should we be focusing on "services" which are made up of one or more things, such as servers. So a service may be Internet, Firewalls, Payroll (which may be made up of two servers with a dependancy on another service such as database cluster). A matrix is a good out, I have an example one.
The planning process really needs some clear thought, its going to be hard to articulate. Need to think more here.
Mate this is fantastic stuff, keep it coming. It think we can make the best document in the blueprint!

Just before SRM was released VMware put out a DR cookbook or whitepaper that had a lot of stuff in it. Anyone remember where it is, can we grab a link for the resource listing.
Anyone want to review it and see if their is any good content or some ideas to add into our overview?
Rodos
Sorry, I didin't understand what you meant by "input" and "output"....Now I have to think again...But Hey the coffee is kicking in!
My favorite "VMbook" -> http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/practical_guide_bcdr_vmb.pdf
Thats it! Anything good in there we can borrow of use as ideas, especially for the outline?
Rodos
Its a doc on how to do SRM withoutactually using SRM. But it has a lot of great concepts surrounding design of the VI from a BCDR perspective.
