Document Development Thread - VI3 Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Workshop

I have been tasked with creating the The specified document was not found. document. Its a big job to do well so I am going to use this thread to get collaboration and assistance.

The plan is to use this thread as the workspace for getting the document to a happy first release draft, this stops all of the backwards and forwards chatter messing up the document thread. Once the document is created this thread can be archived or die, as the actual document will be the living item.

So, lets get started.

  • What do you think is important for a holding a workshop on BC and DR?

  • Any ideas of good sources of information?

  • Do you know any good people in this field who may be good contributors?

  • What should not go into the workshop? Were could we get it wrong?

I certainly have plenty of ideas which I will start to outline. Once an outline is completed its on to fleshing it out. Being a workshop the scope is to give a framework for walking through the issues, its not a training course on how to do DR.

Looking forward to your contributions or at least your feedback on my progress.

Rodos

OK, I will start by giving you my answers to the questions posed, then we can start formulating some sort of outline. These are random thoughts in no particular order. The "BC/DR" workshop really becomes a DR workshop.

The things imortant for a BC/DR workshop:

  • Define "BC" and "DR"
  • Define RTO and RPO
  • Define what REALLY needs to be protected for vCenter, license server, etc.
  • Define different types of "disaster" (full site, partial site hardware, software)
  • Describe different backup/archival methods with Pros and Cons
  • Describe different types of replication (array-based, switch-based, host-based and guest-based)
  • Explain why backup to tape or other archival methos is still needed, even with replication
  • Explain that backups must be continued immediately after a disaster recovery event
  • Explain that failback is important
  • Describe the DR testing process

Sorces of info:

Contributors:

  • Me! I worked at a DR services company for five years before becoming a consultant.
  • Maybe Duncan Epping, he is a VMware PSO now...

What should not go into the workshop:

  • The one thing I do not like about the VMware Jumpstart material is that it gets a little "sales-y"
  • It should not be a generalized workshop. It should only discuss VMware (or virtualization) related DR

Hope this helps...

Dave

Rod -

Here are some additios for you (pre coffee). I am assuming that this is a public post and anyone can offer input, which is good. Also, will this be a document or a powerpoint with lots of notes and a guide?

  1. Overview and background

    1. What is BC and DR

    2. What is RTO and RPO

    3. Types of disaster

      1. Site

      2. Service

      3. Hardware

      4. Software

    4. A framework for understanding DR (I have a diagram for this)

    5. Moving data (same format for each, a short description, pro/con, examples/vendors with links)

      1. Application based replication (eg DataGuard for Oracle)

      2. Host based replication (eg DT)

      3. VMware based replication (eg vReplicator)

      4. Fabric based (eg FalconStor, RecoverPoint)

      5. SAN based (eg MirrorView, TrueCopy)

      6. Backup (DataDomain, replicated VTL or plain old tape!)

    6. Failover techniques

      1. Manual

      2. SRM

      3. Clusters

    7. Storage considerations

      1. General?

      2. Protection Groups

    8. Networking considerations

      1. LAN

      2. WAN

    9. Failback

    10. Recovery testing

    11. Other considerations (backup, archival)

  2. Specific application or service requirements

    1. VMware

      1. ESX/ESXi
      2. vCenter / license server
      3. supporting apps (LCM, View)
    2. AD

    3. Exchange?

    4. SQL
  3. Planning your DR

    1. Inputs

      2. Budget for DR
    2. The planning process

      1. Tiers / SLAs
        1. Order of recovery (Domain controller before Exchange, etc)
      2. Matching Tiers to RTO/RPO objectives
      3. Matching RTO/RPO objectives to storage protection groups
      4. Determining methods to meet objectives
        1. Matching methods with budget

Nice! This is usually something I end up drawing on the largest whiteboard I can find.

Yeah..when it comes to powerpoint and visio diagrams, I am a stumbling idiot. I can't even draw a straight line with a straight-edge!

Its a doc on how to do SRM withoutactually using SRM. But it has a lot of great concepts surrounding design of the VI from a BCDR perspective.
