Windows 2008 Server in VM

We are going to start deploying our DC's and RDC's as well as Exchnage 2007 in our VDI. I have heard that 2008 doesn't work well with memory ballooning and over subscribing. Anyone have any best practices for installing 2008 server or anything to be wary of?

Thanks,

Tim

Tim, hopefully we'll get some other responses from the field but I checked with our folks who run Windows Server 2008 and they haven't seen these issues. You also might want to check VMTN. If you are thinking about virtualizing Exchange check out Deploy Exchange on a Dynamic Platform for lots of good information.

Hi Tim

I've not heard anything to do with 2008 not liking ballooning or memory over-commit and we have quite a number of 2008 VMs running on a very overused cluster (3 hosts, 100 VMs) - posting a question on the community forum would be a good idea though - you'll get lots of users able to comment.

+1 have not seen these issues either. And +1 that VMTN is definately the correct resource for the technical answer though.

Additionally, and slightly unrelated but customisation of windows 2008 is now supported in vCenter 2.5 Update 4 and available for download.

The reason I mention that is my customers and I have been longing for the supported customisations to work for a while!

I was running 2008 for a while with no issues except a higher than normal memory usage if it was a terminal server (but then again I saw the same thing in 2003 terminal servers on VMware).
