I have a customer who is "exploring the possibility of
using VMware in the
Oracle Financials environments for
Linux". Can someone point me to docs, practices, communities, etc
that I can share? Thank you! R/ Porter

Tim Hall of
oracle-base.com fame wrote a guide
on installing
Oracle RAC on VMware Server... to
think that people are scared of running RAC on ESX, and here's
Tim doing the job on our free, hosted product! Great work, Tim!
Of course, we couldn't leave it like that, so I logged on to
Tim's website, registered myself, and asked him if he'd be
interested in doing the same on ESX Server

And in the interest of completeness if anyone has gone the

SAP ECC and Netweaver as you mentioned,
Oracle RAC.

I remember when
Oracle had VMware VM templates on
the
Oracle Technology website for free
download to create a simple, two-node RAC cluster on a laptop or
small desktop. I actually installed and configured this myself
while I was at NetApp, in early
Oracle 10g Release 1 days. Of
course, the hardening of
Oracle's position with respect to
VMware quickly put a stop to that. This fills the gap left

compared to lower utilised apps. SAP appears to operate
more effciently on Linux and

Hi. ... ... In a RAC installation with a shared
ORACLE_HOME, as shown in this
installation, everything of important is placed on the shared
disks, so the local disks contain only the operating system and a
few config files. As a result, the system is not heavily
dependent on the local filesystem. As a result, you can choose a
simple partitioning scheme with no detrimental effects

Not via the VIC, but by direct interaction with your VC
database. The KB article referenced below has scripts attached
for both Microsoft SQL Server and
Oracle. How can I purge old data
from the database used by VirtualCenter Server? (1000125)

Tim, ... ... I noticed that for the package install that
you installed just the basic Linux packages and then installed
extras after that. When reading through the list, there are lot
of packages missing that
Oracle requires that don't come with
the basic install and weren't installed after. Here are a couple:
... ... 1. libstdc++-3.4.3-9.EL4 ... 2.
libstdc++-devel-3.4.3-9.EL4 ... 3. glibc-2.3

I've converted this thread into a doc, and put it into the
proven practice format. Check out the draft of Here's a challenge
to the new VIOPS community - what SQL Server gurus do we have out
there who can work on this document just like Tim Hall did for
Oracle? Anyone can edit the draft
and add in their own experiences and practices, or they could
create a copy and do their own. It's a great
