Converter error

Hi Kelly,

I've put this on a different thread but said I would ask you as you have been of such help in the past

Converter errors

Im running vmware converter standalone, ran on a W2k3 server (importing an online physical server,i.e itself ) . I am trying to P2V itself and send it to out to our ESX3.5 server\datastore (destination)

sorry I cant explain it any better than this.

Hi All, I'm getting this error

Unknown error returned by Vmware convertor Agent

and in the logs its saying

2009-10-29 15:18:11.119 'ClientConnection' 5028 info Making sure that UFAD interface has version vmware-converter-4.0.2

2009-10-29 15:18:11.135 'ClientConnection' 5028 info UFAD interface version is vmware-converter-4.0.2

2009-10-29 15:18:11.181 'P2V' 4256 info task,275 Starting execution of a Task

2009-10-29 15:18:11.181 'P2V' 4256 info ufaTask,207 Successfully connected to VMImporter

2009-10-29 15:19:20.149 'P2V' 4256 error task,296 Task failed: P2VError UNKNOWN_METHOD_FAULT(sysimage.fault.ImageProcessingTaskFault)

Is there no way I can P2V it to itself and then copy it to the datastore

(when i try this, it just doesnt see a file the file even though its there)

What is the best P2V tool out there?..

Thanks for any help provided

Re: Converter error

Hey...Glad to hear its getting along, pitty about these issues though...Never mind.

In regards to what P2V products there are, you have a few choices - VMWare (naturally) have their P2V product, Vizioncore has one (vConverter) and Platespin have one as well. VMWares vCenter Converter normally works pretty well, but yeah can give some really wierd messages sometimes. Couple of things to look out for here and to be aware of:

* disk space on the c:\ drive of the W2K3 server being converted - make sure there is plenty of space available, if not, the conversion will fail

* DNS is setup and working (the W2K3 server should be able to ping by name the ESX host)

* Use IP of the ESX server when you enter the "target" of the host

If all else fails, you can run the Converter and do a cold conversion. Just means you have to shutdown the W2K3 server when you do it.

Are you able to run through the conversion process again and then attach the complete log?? Also, when does it stop - at what point, etc??

Cheers.

Re: Converter error

No worries...Thats OK you shouldn't need to modify the Guest OS when you do the Conversion anyway. Simply click OK and keep the process going.

Hope it all goes well...Ta.

Re: Converter error

Doesn't really show a definate reason why it keeps failing...but, one thing to try would be to hard code the NIC speeds to 1000MB Full Duplex. If both NICs are plugged in, try removing one from the network (or disabling one) and see how that goes...

Failing all of that - you could run a cold migration, not ideal I know, but would ensure the OS isn't causing any issues with the migration.

Good luck :)

Re: Converter error

Hi,

I'd also check the status of the vss writers on the server you are tyring to clone. Run 'vssadm list writers' from a command prompt to see if everything is ok..

Regards,
Gary
