We are planning a proven practice for SAP.... what other applications?
SAP ECC and Netweaver as you mentioned, Oracle RAC.
I am having a difficult time convincing my DBA's putting SQL 2005 on a virtual server would be beneficial. I'd like to see a proven practice with some best practices for this scenario.
SQL2005 was already mentioned... I'll second it. In addition Exchange 2007
Just tossing my two cents in but I'd like to see one for Siebel.
Citrix
I know there is alot of information out there, but I still feel that there is a need to get things summed up.
Thanks for the answers so far, can the next people post please add / edit this list in their reply...helps us all keep track.
Please note - anyone out there can contribute a proven practice to this site. If you have virtualized one of these apps, then please share your approach - anything from a "ten step list" is good, but we would all like something as comprehensive as Oracle 11g Release 1 RAC On RHEL5 Linux Using VMware ESX Server and NFS
If those of you out there in the community can produce something, I'll work with VMware staff internally to find these proven practices - it's my belief that there will be more than one way to virtualize an application, as opposed to "the one true way"... although we might find a pattern emerging once we have a few practices to look at.

Hi, I'd like to tack on Active Directory if possible as despite a few community posts I've not really seen anything since VMWorld 2006 and certainly nothing that seems to address the good stuff Server 2008 is bringing like Server Core, RODC, etc. I'd like to "3rd" SQL2005 as well.

Hey Tom, you probably saw Chris Skinner @ VMworld 06? He did the same talk in 07 and is doing another in 08!
Chris has also contributed a lot of content already on this site - check out all his VCB proven practices! The guy is a machine!
I am pretty sure that Chris has a proven practice for virtualizing AD - I'll email him a link to this thread (using the Send as Email link over on the right) and get him to speak up... as he's a VCI in the US I'm not sure how quick his response will be.
Thanks for the votes!
Cheers
Steve
SQLServer 2005 / 2008 / Exchange 2007 / Websphere 5, 6, 6.1
I would also cast my vote for Citrix/best practices for it in VMWare.
Erik
SQL 2005 & 2008 and Citrix as well. (He requests selfishly as these all the apps that seem to be going on-line in work at the moment!)
Hi there, I'd like to see some best practices for Exchange 2007, and the Blackberry Enterprise server.
SQL 2005 would be nice as well.

When replying to this thread, please copy the list below and add either a new line for a new app, or +1 on any of the lines to cast your vote - makes it easier for us all... easiest way is to select Plain Text mode when you're editing - well, I find it easier that way anyhoo ![]()
Thanks!
