VI3.Blueprint Designing Stage Document Specifications

VERSION 17 Published

Created on: Mar 4, 2009 10:36 AM by Steve Chambers - Last Modified:  Mar 16, 2009 1:07 PM by Steve Chambers

This document is used to sketch the Designing Stage documents prior to loading up the specs into the tasks and then starting work on the documents.

VIOPS VI3.Blueprint 20080301.png

Figure 1 - VI3.Blueprint Designing Stage Document Schematic (and breathe!)

Each of the sections below should specify what the document is supposed to deliver/look like, and is used by the collaborators on a document to work to the same plan.

Why bother with this specification step? Why not just jump straight in and create the document? The answer is: this method helps collaboration: we've learned through experience that having more than one person work on a document without a specification makes the job N times as hard, where N = Number of Collaborators.

How is this document used?

  • Collaborators take these specifications, copy them and paste them into their working documents - they then work on and agree the spec.

  • With an agreed spec, the VI3.Blueprint project task is updated as being in "Writing" status.

  • When the document draft has been written, any changes to the document structure are fed back into the spec to make sure the two match

  • With an agreed draft, the VI3.Blueprint project task is updated as being in "Review" status.

VI3.Blueprint Requirements Specification

List of all the requirements across technical and service considerations

The requirements specification document lists the requirements of the various stakeholders and covers technical and service requirements. The best requirements are those that, like SMART objectives, are well defined. The more vague the are the less likely they are to be satisfied. During the lifetime of any VI3 project these requirements might change, if you allow that (and some say that is best practice, some don't): if you believe that you can capture all the requirements at the start of a project and still deliver what the customer wants six months later, then good for you - but I'm a mere mortal and for me this requirements list will change as the project develops. This document is under change control so any changes to requirements are managed before being accepted/rejected.

The document should be in the standard format of:

  • Title

    • VI3.Blueprint Design Requirements Specification

  • Introduction

    • The Requirement Specification document lists the needs of the stakeholders and is used to drive design decisions and check that the solution is fit for purpose (ie. meets the needs of the stakeholders).

    • The requirements are divided into technical and service requirements and used in all of the workshops in the Designing stage to refine and improve the requirements and the design decisions and documents.

  • Intended Audience

    • VMware Certified Professionals (VCP), IT Architects/Designers and Project Management Professionals (PMP or Prince2)

  • Outline

    • Inputs

    • How the requirements are managed (submitted, change controlled, refined in workshops)

VI3 Event Management Workshop

Bringing together VCP/VCDX, IT Operations and Systems Management

The purpose of the workshop is to bring together VMware Certified Professionals (VCP), Operational and Systems Management professionals to share understanding of VI3 and Event/Systems Management so that a monitoring system can be jointly developed for VI3.

The goal of the workshop is to use a whiteboard diagram of non-virtual and VI3 managed objects to identify the events and integrations that need to be designed to integrate VI3 with your event management system.
